Vaccinating Animals

You may be familiar with the text saying your pet is “due for the annual vaccination and health check”. Vaccinations are essential to maintaining good health and wellbeing in your pets. Much like us, they need regular boosters to stay immunised against certain diseases.

Cats and dogs are routinely vaccinated with what we call “core” vaccines – vaccines that are highly recommended and essential for your pets.
In dogs, these are:

  • Kennel Cough – a highly infectious respiratory disease

  • Distemper – a very contagious and often fatal disease that affects the gastrointestinal, respiratory and nervous system

  • Hepatitis – a diseases affecting dogs’ livers and other organ

  • Parvovirus – an incredibly contagious and often fatal disease that causes gastrointestinal signs, such as vomiting and diarrhea

In cats, the core vaccines are:

  • Rhinotracheitis – a type of herpesvirus that causes respiratory signs, such as sneezing and nasal discharge

  • Panleukopaenia – a very contagious disease that causes gastrointestinal signs. This can be fatal, especially in kittens.

  • Calicivirus – a type of virus that causes respiratory signs like oral ulcers and sneezing.

There are also “non-core” vaccines that can be given to our pets – the necessity of these is determined by your pet’s risk of exposure to the diseases.

If you want to discuss your pet’s vaccinations or have any questions about their core and non-core vaccines, do not hesitate to contact our team on 5234 0077.
