Suitable for puppies aged 8 weeks to 12 weeks

At Vets of Geelong, we offer two puppy classes, baby puppy and junior puppy classes to cater for and support learning throughout the different developmental stages of a puppy.

Our baby puppy classes are designed for puppies aged 8-12 weeks and are a fun and supportive way to build confidence, social skills, and a strong bond with your pup. Run by our experienced and friendly dog trainer Lisa, these classes focus on positive reinforcement, gentle handling, and practical training for everyday life.

Key Information

🖊️ Puppies must be 8 weeks to 12 weeks of age at the commencement of the class
🖊️ Runs for 6 weeks
🖊️45 minute class
🖊️ Involves the whole family to train and create a positive learning environment for the children and the puppy
🖊️ Program has core curriculum but we also consider the needs of the individual. Cover skills such as "come", "sit", "drop", "stand", "watch", "touch", leash walking, relaxation drop, "stay", "wait" and engagement games
🖊️Socialisation builds on life experiences. It is controlled and carefully managed. Weekly themes such as noises, wheels, handling all over etc.

Additional Information

Over the 6 classes the clients will:

Develop an understanding of why your puppy does what it does
Learn strategies to build a better connection to help support your puppy to listen better under distraction
Socialisation will be done in a controlled and careful manner so that each puppy is able to listen and function. Socialisation will include teaching the puppy to cope with the world around them, listen to owners when distracted especially in the presence of other dogs.
Each class builds on the previous week as they learn instructions such as "bridge", "sit", "drop", "stand", "come", "touch", "stay", "wait", "watch", walk on leash as well as some engagement games to build a better connection with your puppy.
Each class is supported by our "Puppy Class Reference Book" and comprehensive week summary emails complete with videos and/or worksheets to refer to

About puppy classes

At Vets of Geelong our six week puppy class ensures that you are supported to help your puppy become a well-mannered and adjusted member of your family.

We encourage the whole family to participate in our fun, and interactive classes, so that everyone is on the same page with teaching and supporting the puppy’s household manners. In our puppy class you will learn how to teach your puppy:

Its name and to come when called even under distraction.
How to avoid jumping up.
Sit, drop and stand.
Stay and wait.
Introducing walking on leash.
How to interact appropriately with other dogs and with people.
Tricks to enhance learning.
As well as some fun life experiences.

What topics will be covered?

During Puppy Classes we will also have discussion times in the class for the puppies to have a break/quiet time. We discuss topics such as:

Dealing with mouthing, resource guarding, chewing and digging.

Toilet training.
Boredom prevention.
Maintain good health of your puppy.
Diet
How to generally care for your puppy in regards to grooming, bathing etc.
Understanding basic dog behaviour and why dogs do what they do sometimes.

When are classes held?

Usually Tuesdays 4pm and 7pm, Wednesdays 4pm and 5.30pm (ideal for families and those who do not want to come out at night), Thursdays 5.30pm ( during daylight savings) and alternate Saturdays 9.30am ( not during daylight savings )

Can my children come to the class?

We encourage children to participate in our puppy classes so they too can play a role in looking after their puppy in a fun way.

Where are the classes held?

Weekly classes are held in our purpose built training facility located upstairs at our Highton Clinic.

How long do the classes run for?

Our puppy classes are a 6 week program.
