Pet Insurance: Is It Worth It? A Vet’s Perspective

Pet insurance is optional, and the right choice depends on your pet, your household budget and the financial risk you are comfortable managing. It may help with eligible, unexpected veterinary costs, but it does not guarantee that every condition, test or treatment will be covered. The insurer decides claims under its policy terms; our team can explain your pet’s care needs but does not recommend a particular insurer.

What pet insurance may cover

Policies differ. Some offer routine or wellness cover for planned care such as vaccinations, desexing, parasite prevention or dental cleans. Other policies focus on accidents and illness. Some may include hereditary, dental or other benefits only where those items are specified in the policy. Check the current Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and policy wording rather than relying on a headline benefit.

How to compare a policy

Before you buy or renew, compare the cover, exclusions, benefit limits, excesses, waiting periods, reimbursement percentage and claim process. Ask the insurer how it treats your pet’s age, breed, recorded health history and previous concerns. Check whether an excess applies once, per condition or more often, and what you may need to pay while a claim is assessed. Keep the documents you relied on and ask questions before committing.

Insurance is one way to prepare for an unexpected bill. Some owners instead build a dedicated emergency fund, or use both approaches. Neither removes the need to plan for an excess, non-covered costs or a claim that is not accepted. If your pet needs urgent attention, seek veterinary care promptly rather than delaying while you wait for an insurance answer.

Claims at Vets of Geelong

Many policies use a reimbursement model, where the owner follows the insurer’s claim process after the visit. At Vets of Geelong, GAPonly may be available where the policy and claim are eligible. If a GAPonly claim is being processed, the final invoice and claim details need to be completed before the GAP difference owing can be calculated. Eligibility and the insurer’s benefit remain subject to the individual policy and claim assessment. Read more about GAPonly claims and confirm the current process with reception before relying on it.

Please note: GAPonly is not available on Sundays.

Petcover direct claims are a separate process from GAPonly. For an active and valid Petcover policy, a direct claim may be available for eligible accident-or-illness treatment by prior arrangement. The owner remains responsible for the policy excess, non-covered items and rejected costs. Petcover decides the claim under its policy terms; a direct-claim pathway does not guarantee approval or payment. Routine or wellness treatment may not be eligible for this pathway. Ask your insurer and our reception team to confirm the current arrangements before relying on them.

For puppies aged 8 weeks to 12 months, reception can discuss the clinic’s four weeks of free Petcover insurance. Introductory cover, acceptance criteria, exclusions and waiting periods are subject to the current policy documents. Waiting periods for a separately purchased policy depend on the type of claim, so do not assume that one period applies to every injury or illness. Check the current product terms before relying on cover. Payment is otherwise required at the time of service.

A practical decision

A policy can be useful if its limits, exclusions and claims process fit the care choices you would want to consider for your pet. Take time to read the detail while you are not under pressure. If you need urgent help, see our emergency veterinary care information and contact a veterinary team promptly.
