Travelling with Pets: Preparation and Safety Guidelines

Travelling with Pets: Preparation and Safety Guidelines

Travelling with your pet can be stressful if you are not prepared. In this guide, we will cover all the considerations you should make before travelling a long distance.

Before The Trip

Book a pre-travel vet checkup

Before you travel, it is highly advisable that you visit the vet to ensure your pet is in top condition. This is especially important if you plan to travel internationally. Overseas travel with pets needs to be carefully considered due to the quarantine restrictions of various countries, which may require specific vaccinations, health certificates, and blood tests. Re-entry into Australia also has strict requirements that must be met. It’s crucial to allow three to six months to arrange all necessary paperwork, vaccinations, and blood tests, depending on your destination country. Starting this process well in advance ensures your pet meets all requirements and avoids any travel disruptions.

As part of your pre-travel checks, your vet will recommend and administer preventative measures for parasites and common diseases your pet may encounter at your destination.

Microchip your pets

The last thing any owner wants is to lose their pet during their journey. Microchipping your pet will give you the best chance of being reunited should you ever get separated. Your pet should also wear a collar with identification unless you are travelling by plane, where identification should be attached to the outside of the carrier.

Select an appropriate travel carrier

Selecting a pet carrier of ample size for your pet is vital to maintaining their welfare during the journey. The carrier should be big enough for your pet to rest in comfortably.

Pet carriers are particularly important if you are travelling by air. Be sure to select a carrier that complies with airline regulations for ventilation, security and space.

Acclimatise pets to travel

If your pet isn’t used to travelling, exposing them to travel conditions can help reduce their anxiety. For example, all animals should be allowed to get used to their travel carrier in a comfortable and relaxed environment. If you plan to be doing long road trips, make short trial trips to get your pet used to it. You can also play traffic, aeroplane and other common travel noises to get your pet acclimated to them. Offer lots of treats and positive reinforcement.

Check international guidelines for pets

Be sure to check the requirements for entry for any foreign countries you plan to visit during your trip. You will likely need pet passports, health certifications and vaccination.

During The Trip

Pack all the essentials for your pet

To keep your pet as comfortable as possible, be sure to pack the following:

  • Food and water – it is recommended not to feed your pet within 8 hours of travel to avoid upset stomachs (though this timeframe is greatly reduced for young puppies). However, you still need to provide food during longer rest stops.
  • Pet medications – don’t forget to bring your pet’s medication with you while travelling.
  • Comfort items – having toys, blankets and other familiar items for your pet will help them feel more relaxed and comfortable.
  • Soft towel – this is ideal for wiping down your pet or cleaning up messes should they occur.
  • Disposable waste bags – this will help you responsibly clean up dog mess during rest stops.
  • Collar and lead – essential for walking your dog safely during rest stops.
  • Pet wipes or wet towels – these are perfect for freshening up your pet during the journey.
  • Litter box or pee pads – if you are travelling with a cat, bringing these along will give them somewhere familiar to do their business.

Maintain a quiet and comfortable environment

If you are travelling by car, be sure to keep the atmosphere as quiet and peaceful as possible.

Plan in exercise and bathroom breaks during the trip

Remember that your pet needs a bathroom and exercise break as much as you do! Try to plan regular breaks into your journey to avoid accidents and keep your pet happy.
